How early is too early for save the date?

Answered by the UK Wedding Websites editorial team · Updated 2026-10-12

Short answer

Sending save the dates more than 12 months ahead is usually too early for most guests. A year is plenty, unless you have many guests travelling from abroad or a very popular date. Then 12 months is fine.

For most UK weddings, a year ahead is the sensible limit. Sending them 18 months or more out can feel premature. Guests may lose the card, forget the date, or assume plans might change. A save the date works best when your venue and date are confirmed, and you are confident the plan will hold.

If you have guests coming from overseas, or you are marrying on a bank holiday weekend, 12 months is helpful. For everyone else, 9 to 10 months is plenty. Sending earlier than that rarely adds value, and it can create pressure if you later need to change the date. Remember, your save the date is a promise, so only send it once you are sure.

If you are marrying in peak season, like summer or December, earlier is kinder. But resist the urge to send them the moment you book the venue. Give yourself time to finalise the guest list and check your venue contract. A calm, confident save the date is better than a rushed one.
