Is 4 months too late to send save the date?

Answered by the UK Wedding Websites editorial team · Updated 2026-10-12 · For guests

Short answer

Four months is not too late, but it is late for most weddings. If your guests are local and your date is flexible, it can still work. For destination weddings or peak dates, it is risky.

Four months before the wedding is the very edge of the save the date window. It is not a disaster, but it changes how useful the card is. At four months, many guests will already be thinking about travel, accommodation and time off work. A save the date arriving that late may feel like an invitation that got lost in the post.

If your wedding is local, on a weekday, or in a quiet season, four months is workable. Guests can still book time off and arrange childcare. But if you have guests flying in, or you are marrying on a summer Saturday, four months is genuinely late. Some guests may have already made other plans.

If you are at four months and have not sent anything, consider skipping the save the date and sending a full invitation soon. That is often kinder than a late save the date that creates confusion. If you do send one, keep it simple and make sure the invitation follows within a few weeks. Your guests will appreciate clarity over extra post.
