How late is too late to send wedding invitations?

Answered by the UK Wedding Websites editorial team · Updated 2026-10-12 · For guests

Short answer

Sending invitations less than 4 weeks before the wedding is too late for most guests. They need time to arrange travel, time off and childcare. If you are under 4 weeks, contact guests by phone or email first, then send a card as a keepsake.

As a general rule, do not send invitations later than 4 weeks before the wedding. By that point, many guests will have made other plans, booked holidays, or assumed they are not invited. You risk lower attendance and hurt feelings.

If you find yourself under 4 weeks, act quickly. Call or email each guest personally, explain the situation warmly, and ask if they can come. Then send a proper invitation by post as a formality and keepsake. Most people will understand, especially if you are friendly and apologetic.

For very close family and the bridal party, you can be more relaxed, but even they appreciate a heads-up. If you are sending invitations late because of a change of date or venue, be extra clear and kind about the reason.

Remember that some guests may need to book time off work with several weeks' notice, or arrange for pets or children. The more notice you give, the more likely they can say yes. If you are truly stuck, consider a digital invitation or a group message to save time, but always follow up with a physical card if you can.
