If my wedding is in September, when should I send out invitations?

Answered by the UK Wedding Websites editorial team · Updated 2026-10-12 · For guests

Short answer

For a September wedding, send invitations in late June or early July, about 10 to 12 weeks before the date. This gives guests time to plan for the end of summer and any travel.

A September wedding is lovely, but it falls at a busy time. Many people are returning from summer holidays, and schools have just gone back. Sending invitations in late June or early July works well. That is roughly 10 to 12 weeks before the wedding, giving guests plenty of notice without being too early.

If your wedding is early September, aim for mid to late June. If it is late September, early July is fine. Consider whether any guests have children starting school or university, as that can affect their availability and budget.

Also think about bank holidays. If your September date falls near a bank holiday weekend, guests may need extra notice to book travel or accommodation. In that case, send invitations closer to 12 weeks ahead.

Remember to send save the dates earlier, around March or April, especially if guests need to book hotels or flights. Then the formal invitation in June or July can include the final RSVP deadline, which should be at least four weeks before the wedding, so early to mid August.
