How do you reply to a save the date?

Answered by the UK Wedding Websites editorial team · Updated 2026-10-12 · For the bridal party · For guests

Short answer

Reply as soon as you can, even though no formal RSVP is needed. Send a short, warm message to the couple saying you have noted the date and look forward to the invitation. Do not confirm attendance yet, just acknowledge receipt.

A save the date is not an invitation, so you do not need to give a final yes or no. But it is kind to let the couple know you received it and are pleased for them. A simple message works: "Thank you for the save the date, we have it in the diary and look forward to the invitation." If you know you cannot attend, it is also kind to say so early, as this helps the couple plan numbers. If you are unsure, you can say you hope to be there and will confirm when the invitation arrives. Do not feel you must book travel or accommodation immediately, but if the wedding is far away or on a busy date, you might start thinking about it. If the save the date includes a wedding website, you can look at it for general information, but you do not need to register interest. For guests with young children, it is helpful to ask whether children are invited, but only if the save the date does not already say. Always reply in the same way you received the save the date, by post, email, or message.
