What is the order of service for a Hindu wedding?

Answered by the UK Wedding Websites editorial team · Updated 2026-10-12 · For guests

Short answer

A Hindu wedding has no single fixed order, but a typical UK ceremony includes a welcome, the Ganesh puja, the kanyadaan, the mangal phera around the sacred fire, and the saptapadi, or seven steps.

A Hindu wedding is rich with rituals that vary by region, family tradition and the priest's guidance. There is no one set order, but many UK ceremonies follow a common sequence. The service often begins with a welcome and the Ganesh puja, a prayer to remove obstacles. The bride's parents then perform the kanyadaan, giving their daughter away. The couple may exchange garlands, called jaimala, as a sign of acceptance.

The central ritual is the mangal phera, where the couple circles a sacred fire four times, making promises about dharma, prosperity, love and spiritual growth. This is followed by the saptapadi, the seven steps, where the couple takes seven steps together, each step representing a vow. The priest ties the mangalsutra, a sacred necklace, around the bride's neck, and the couple may apply sindoor, a red powder, to the bride's forehead. The ceremony ends with blessings from the priest and the families, and often a shower of flower petals.

A Hindu ceremony is not legally binding on its own in the UK unless it takes place in a building registered for marriages with an authorised person present. Many couples have a short civil ceremony at a register office or approved venue as well. The order can vary widely, so work closely with your priest to plan the sequence. Check with your place of worship and the register office for the current legal requirements.
