What is the order of service for a wedding ceremony?

Answered by the UK Wedding Websites editorial team · Updated 2026-10-12 · For guests

Short answer

A wedding ceremony usually starts with music and the entrance, followed by welcome words, vows, rings, readings, a ceremony type specific part, and a closing. The exact order depends on your venue and beliefs.

There is no single fixed order, but most ceremonies follow a familiar flow. You and your partner will agree on each part with your registrar, celebrant or religious leader before the day. The order of service is simply the printed list of what happens and when.

A typical sequence begins with guests being seated and processional music. The officiant welcomes everyone and may share a short reflection. You then exchange vows and rings, often with a reading or poem between them. Some ceremonies include a unity ritual, a ring blessing, or a religious rite such as banns or a declaration of faith.

The ceremony ends with the officiant declaring you married, the signing of the marriage schedule by you, your partner and two witnesses, and recessional music as you leave. Civil ceremonies cannot include hymns, prayers or religious readings, but poems and songs are fine if the registrar agrees. Religious buildings may follow their own traditions.
