What is a good font for a wedding order of service?

Answered by the UK Wedding Websites editorial team · Updated 2026-10-12

Short answer

A good font is one that is readable from a distance and matches your wedding style. Serif fonts like Garamond or Baskerville look classic, while clean sans-serif fonts like Helvetica or Futura feel modern. Use one font for headings and another for body text, but keep both simple.

The best font for an order of service is one that guests can read easily, especially in a dim church or a bright outdoor space. Fancy script fonts can look pretty for your names or a single heading, but they are hard to read for long passages. So use a script font sparingly, for example for the couple's names on the front cover, and pair it with a clear font for the inside text.

Serif fonts, which have small lines at the ends of letters, are a traditional choice. They feel elegant and timeless, and they work well for formal weddings. Sans-serif fonts, which have no lines, look cleaner and more contemporary. You can mix the two, for example a serif for headings and a sans-serif for body text, or the other way round. Just make sure the contrast is clear, so the hierarchy is obvious.

Size matters too. Body text should be at least 10 or 11 points, and headings larger. Avoid using all capitals for long sentences, because they are harder to read. Also think about the paper and ink. A light grey or gold ink might look lovely, but if the contrast is too low, guests will struggle. Test your font choices by printing a sample and reading it from arm's length. If you can read it easily, it is probably fine. If not, choose something simpler.
