Do parents usually give speeches at weddings?

Answered by the UK Wedding Websites editorial team · Updated 2026-10-12 · For parents

Short answer

Yes, parents often speak, especially the father of the bride, but it is now common for mothers, step-parents or both parents to share a toast. Whether they do is entirely your choice.

In the past the father of the bride traditionally gave the opening speech, but today many couples invite mothers, step-parents or both parents to speak. Some families prefer a joint speech from both parents, while others ask each parent to give a short, separate toast.

If you have divorced or separated parents, decide who will speak and when with care. A thoughtful arrangement can avoid awkwardness and make sure everyone feels included. You might ask one parent to welcome guests and the other to share a personal message, or simply ask them to raise a glass together.

Step-parents and chosen family are also welcome to speak if they have been a steady presence in the couple's life. There is no requirement for parents to speak, so if they would rather not, they can still host a welcome drink or give a private word of advice. Confirm any plans with your venue and let all parents know their role well in advance.
