What is the modern order of speeches at a UK wedding?

Answered by the UK Wedding Websites editorial team · Updated 2026-10-12 · For guests

Short answer

The modern order usually has the couple speaking first, then the hosts, then the parents. After that come the best person and other friends or family. You can mix it up, but the couple often opens and the best person closes.

Many UK couples now choose to speak early, often right after the meal, to thank their guests and set a warm tone. The hosts, usually the parents or the couple themselves, follow with a welcome and thanks. Then the parents may speak, often the father of the bride, but mothers and both sets of parents are common too.

The best person traditionally speaks last, to propose a toast to the couple and share stories. You might also hear from the maid of honour, bridesmaids, siblings or close friends. Some couples ask the best person to open and the couple to close, or they give the final word to a parent.

There is no legal rule about speeches. The only legal requirement is that the marriage itself is conducted properly. You can arrange the order to suit your family and friends. If you want a religious or cultural tradition, check with your venue or place of worship. The key is to keep it kind, brief and personal. Ask each speaker to keep to two or three minutes, and agree who will introduce whom. That keeps the flow natural and relaxed.
