Short answer
UK wedding speech etiquette traditionally has the father of the couple, then the couple, then the best person. But modern weddings are flexible. The key is to keep speeches short, thank guests, and avoid embarrassing stories. Anyone can speak if the couple agrees.
Speech etiquette has relaxed a lot in recent years. The old order was the father of the bride, the groom, and the best man. Now many couples choose their own line-up. You might have both parents, the couple together, the maid of honour, or no speeches at all. The important thing is to agree the order in advance and tell everyone who is speaking.
Keep each speech to around three to five minutes. That feels short, but it is plenty. Start by thanking the guests for coming, and thank your partner, parents, and anyone who helped. If you are the best person or maid of honour, share one or two kind or funny stories, but avoid anything that might embarrass the couple or their families. Check with the couple first if you are unsure.
Guests should listen quietly and clap at the end. It is fine to laugh, but do not heckle or shout out. If you are the host, make sure there is water or a drink for each speaker. Also, think about timing: speeches often work well before the meal or just after, when people are seated and paying attention. If you have children speaking, keep it very short. The main rule is to be warm and genuine. A short, heartfelt speech is always better than a long, polished one.
