What are the etiquette rules for a Sikh wedding?

Answered by the UK Wedding Websites editorial team · Updated 2026-10-12 · For guests

Short answer

Treat the ceremony with respect, cover your head in the Gurudwara, remove your shoes and dress modestly. Outside the service, follow your host's lead on food, gifts and timing.

A Sikh wedding is a joyful celebration of faith and family, so the most important rule is to be respectful and present. The religious ceremony takes place in a Gurudwara, which is a place of worship, not just a venue. Before you enter, you will be asked to cover your head. Use a scarf, shawl or hat that you bring with you. You must also remove your shoes and wash or clean your feet before stepping onto the carpeted floor.

Dress modestly. This means covering your shoulders and knees for everyone, and many women choose to cover their heads too, even if it is not strictly required. Avoid tight or revealing clothing, and try to avoid black or white, which are often reserved for mourning.

  • Arrive on time and stay for the whole ceremony if you can.
  • Do not take photos during the service unless your host says it is allowed.
  • Sit quietly and follow what others do.

After the ceremony, there is usually a feast. It is polite to accept food and to try everything offered. If you have dietary needs, tell your host in advance. Gifts are welcome but not expected. Many guests give money in a card or a thoughtful present. Follow your family's traditions and your host's wishes above all.
