What is the ardas and when is it said during a Sikh wedding?

Answered by the UK Wedding Websites editorial team · Updated 2026-10-12 · For guests

Short answer

The ardas is the Sikh prayer of thanksgiving and blessing, said at key moments during the Anand Karaj ceremony. It is usually recited before the couple completes the four circumambulations around the Guru Granth Sahib.

The ardas is the central prayer of Sikh weddings, where the congregation joins together to bless the couple. It is a moment of humility and gratitude, asking for strength, unity and a life lived in service.

During the Anand Karaj, the ardas is said at several points. It begins the ceremony, welcoming everyone and setting a spiritual tone. The priest or granthi then leads it again before the couple starts the lavan, the four sacred hymns that mark each stage of marriage. After each round around the Guru Granth Sahib, the ardas is repeated, asking for blessings for that step. It closes the service with a final prayer for the couple's future.

Guests stand, bow their heads and join in the prayer. The couple may place their hands together or rest them on the holy scripture during parts of it. Some families add personal requests for health, family and community. If you are unsure about the order of events, ask the gurdwara committee beforehand. Details can vary between gurdwaras and families, so it is worth confirming the timing with your place of worship.

If you need legal details about registering the marriage, check GOV.UK or speak to your register office, as religious ceremonies alone may not be legally recognised.
