What is appropriate to wear to a Sikh wedding?

Answered by the UK Wedding Websites editorial team · Updated 2026-10-12 · For guests

Short answer

Guests should dress modestly and cover their shoulders and knees, with many choosing traditional South Asian clothing. You should also remove your shoes before entering the gurdwara.

Sikh weddings usually include a ceremony in a gurdwara, so dress with respect for the religious space. The main rule is modesty: cover your shoulders, chest and knees. This applies to everyone, whatever your own background or faith.

Many guests wear traditional South Asian outfits such as a sari, lehenga, salwar kameez or sherwani. These are welcome and often look lovely in the photos. If you prefer a suit or a dress, keep it conservative and avoid anything too revealing or overly flashy. Bright colours and rich fabrics are common and appropriate. White is fine for guests in the UK, though the bride may wear red or another colour depending on her family's choice.

You will need to take off your shoes before entering the prayer hall. Some gurdwaras provide bags or a shelf for them. Women may also be asked to cover their heads with a scarf inside the gurdwara. Carry a light scarf or shawl in your bag so you can do this easily.

If you are unsure about any detail, ask the couple or check with the gurdwara. Rules can vary between families and places of worship.
