What to wear in Gurudwara wedding as a guest?

Answered by the UK Wedding Websites editorial team · Updated 2026-10-12 · For guests

Short answer

Cover your head, cover your shoulders and knees, remove your shoes, and dress modestly and colourfully. These rules apply to every guest, whatever their faith or background.

The Gurudwara is a Sikh place of worship, so the dress code is about respect rather than fashion. Before you enter the main hall, you will be given a head covering. A scarf, shawl, dupatta or even a neat hat works. Make sure it covers your hair completely. You will also be asked to remove your shoes and any headwear before you walk onto the carpet. Some Gurudwaras provide shoe covers, but it is safer to bring your own socks.

Your clothing should cover your shoulders, arms and legs. A long dress, a skirt and a long-sleeved top, or trousers and a blouse are all suitable. Avoid tight, see-through or revealing clothes. Many guests choose bright colours and avoid black and white. Jewellery is fine, but keep it modest and avoid anything that makes noise or distracts during the service.

You may be offered a small token or asked to sit on the floor. Follow the lead of those around you. If you are not sure what to do, a member of the wedding party or a volunteer at the entrance will guide you. The most important thing is that you arrive with a respectful heart and dress in a way that honours the space.
