Who gives toasts at a wedding?

Answered by the UK Wedding Websites editorial team · Updated 2026-10-12 · For guests

Short answer

Traditionally the best man, groom and father of the bride give toasts, but anyone close to the couple can speak. The couple should agree the line-up with their wedding planner or venue beforehand.

There is no fixed rule about who must speak, so the day is shaped by what feels right for your family and friends. The most common arrangement sees the father of the bride welcome everyone, followed by the groom thanking both families, and the best man rounding things off with light-hearted stories.

You might also invite the mother of the bride, a maid of honour, or a sibling to share a few words. Some couples prefer a shorter programme with just two or three speakers, while others enjoy a longer round of tributes. What matters most is that speakers know their audience and keep things warm and inclusive.

If you have step-parents, divorced parents or chosen family, decide early who will speak and who will simply raise a glass. A quick chat with each speaker about timing and content avoids surprises on the day. Remember that a toast is not a requirement, so feel free to drop anyone who would not enjoy the role.
