What is a group photo?

Answered by the UK Wedding Websites editorial team · Updated 2026-10-12 · For the bridal party

Short answer

A group photo is a photograph that includes several people together, usually arranged deliberately. In weddings, it often means family and friends gathered for a formal shot, such as the whole wedding party, both families, or a specific set of guests.

A group photo is simply a picture with more than two or three people in it, posed together. At a wedding, you will usually plan a few set group photos, like one with your parents, one with your bridal party, and one with everyone who came. The photographer will arrange people so everyone can be seen clearly, often in rows or a gentle curve.

You do not need dozens of group photos. Most couples choose around five to ten key combinations and let the photographer know the list beforehand. That keeps the day moving and stops guests waiting around. It helps to assign one person, maybe a friend or a member of the bridal party, to gather the right people for each shot.

Group photos can be formal, with everyone looking at the camera, or more relaxed, with people chatting and laughing. You can also mix in candid group shots during the reception. The important thing is to tell your photographer who matters to you, so no one is left out and you get the pictures you will treasure.
