What are 7 marriage vows?

Answered by the UK Wedding Websites editorial team · Updated 2026-10-12

Short answer

There is no single set of seven vows in the UK. You can choose from traditional wording, religious vows, or write your own promises to one another.

Most couples in England, Wales and Scotland choose either the traditional vows used in civil and many religious ceremonies, or they write their own. There is no official list of seven vows that everyone must use. If you marry in a register office or approved venue, the registrar will guide you through the legal declaration and vows. These usually include words about taking each other as husband or wife, and promising to love, comfort, honour and keep each other. Religious ceremonies may use different wording, such as the Christian vows of the Book of Common Prayer, or vows specific to your faith. You can also add personal promises after the legal words. Many couples write their own vows to say what they truly mean. Keep them short enough to say clearly and without tears. If you are unsure about what is allowed in your ceremony, ask your registrar or the person leading your service. Rules can vary, so check with your register office or place of worship for the current position.
