What are some beautiful vows to say at a wedding?

Answered by the UK Wedding Websites editorial team · Updated 2026-10-12

Short answer

Beautiful vows are honest promises spoken in your own voice, whether traditional, personal or religious. They work best when they name what you love and what you will do.

There is no single right way to write vows. Many couples write their own, and that is often the most moving choice. You might begin by naming three things you love about your partner, then make two or three clear promises for the years ahead. Keep them short enough to say aloud without stumbling.

If you prefer tradition, you can use the words offered by your registrar or celebrant. Religious couples may include scripture or faith-based promises, but civil ceremonies in England and Wales cannot include hymns, prayers or religious readings. Check with your registrar or place of worship if you are unsure.

Some couples choose to write separate vows and read them privately, or read them together and keep the details for each other only. Whatever you choose, practice out loud a few times so the words feel natural on the day. Two witnesses must be present, and the vows are signed as part of your marriage schedule or document.
