What should I look out for when signing a contract?

Answered by the UK Wedding Websites editorial team · Updated 2026-10-12 · For parents

Short answer

Check the date, time, venue name, final price, deposit amount, payment schedule, cancellation policy, and what happens if the supplier cancels. Also look for hidden extras and any clauses that seem unfair.

When you sign a wedding contract, treat it as the most important document of your planning. First, confirm every detail that matters to you: the exact date, start and end times, the room or location, and the number of guests the price covers. Check the total cost and what is included, such as tables, chairs, linen, staff and service charge. Look for a list of extras that cost more, like cake cutting, corkage or overtime. Read the cancellation policy carefully. Know how much notice you must give and what you lose at each stage. Also check what happens if the supplier or venue cancels: do you get a full refund, or are they allowed to move your date? Look for force majeure clauses, which cover events like illness or bad weather, and ask how they work. Check the payment schedule and never pay the full amount before the day. Make sure the contract names the specific person or team who will provide the service, not just a company name. If anything is missing, ask for it to be written in before you sign. Never sign under pressure. Take the contract home, sleep on it, and ask a friend or family member to read it too. If a clause feels unfair, you can negotiate.
