What is a nikkah contract?

Answered by the UK Wedding Websites editorial team · Updated 2026-10-12 · For brides · For grooms

Short answer

A nikkah contract is the Islamic marriage agreement between the bride and groom. It records consent, the mahr and other agreed terms. It is signed before witnesses during the ceremony.

The nikkah contract is a written or spoken agreement that sets out the rights and duties of both partners. The bride and groom each give their free consent. A guardian for the bride, known as a wali, is usually present. The mahr is agreed and recorded. This is a gift from the groom to the bride and is hers alone.

The contract may include other terms, such as conditions about work, study or living arrangements. Both partners can add conditions they consider important. These are recorded so there is no misunderstanding later. The ceremony is led by an imam or another qualified person. Two witnesses are needed. They sign the contract to confirm what happened.

For UK legal purposes, the nikkah contract is not the same as a civil marriage certificate. If you want the marriage to be recognised by the state, you may need a separate civil ceremony. This depends on whether the building and the person are registered. Check GOV.UK and your local register office for the current rules. Religious rules can also vary by school of thought and community.
