How to do nikkah step by step?

Answered by the UK Wedding Websites editorial team · Updated 2026-10-12 · For parents

Short answer

The nikkah involves mutual consent, an offer and acceptance, witnesses, and the mahr, but the legal steps in the UK run through the register office.

In the nikah ceremony, the couple and their families gather, often with an officiant. The offer is made by one party, usually through a guardian or representative, and the other party accepts it clearly in front of witnesses. The mahr, or marriage gift, is agreed and recorded. Two witnesses are needed at the ceremony, and they must hear the offer and acceptance.

For the marriage to be legal in the UK, you also need to complete the civil requirements. Both partners give notice of marriage in person at their local register office, usually where they have lived for at least the last 7 days. Notice must be given at least 28 full days before the ceremony. The wedding must take place within 12 months of giving notice.

A nikah on its own is only legally binding if it happens in a building registered for marriages with an authorised person present. Many couples arrange a short civil ceremony first or alongside their religious ceremony to make sure the marriage is legal. Check GOV.UK, the register office or your place of worship, as rules can vary.
