Short answer
You are not supposed to have any specific number of bridesmaids. In the UK, there is no tradition, law or rule that sets a required number. You can have as many or as few as you like, including none.
The phrase 'supposed to have' suggests there is a rule, but there is not. In the UK, the number of bridesmaids is entirely your choice. There is no official guidance from the government, the register office or the Church of England about how many you should have. The only legal requirement is two witnesses, and those witnesses do not need to be bridesmaids.
Historically, bridesmaids were there to help and to act as witnesses, but that is no longer a practical need. Today, the role is about friendship, support and celebration. So the right number is the number that feels right for you.
Some couples choose a single maid of honour. Others choose a group of three or four. Some choose a large group of eight or more. All of these are acceptable. What matters is that you choose people who will support you, who get along reasonably well and who fit your budget.
Think about the practical side too. Each bridesmaid may need a dress, shoes, hair and makeup, a bouquet and possibly a thank-you gift. That adds up quickly. Also think about the size of your venue and the space at the front for the ceremony. If you have a small room, a huge wedding party can feel crowded.
Talk to your partner and decide together. There is no one-size-fits-all answer. The best number is the one that makes you happy and keeps your planning stress low.
