How should you pay wedding vendors?

Answered by the UK Wedding Websites editorial team · Updated 2026-10-12 · For parents

Short answer

Pay a deposit to secure your booking, then the balance closer to the date, usually a few weeks before. Use bank transfer or card, and keep receipts. Avoid paying the full amount upfront.

Most wedding suppliers ask for a deposit, often around a quarter of the total, to confirm your date. The rest is usually due a few weeks before the wedding, sometimes on the day. Always agree the payment schedule in writing before you pay anything. Ask what happens if you need to cancel or change the date, and get that in your contract.

Pay by bank transfer, debit card or credit card where possible, as these give you a record and sometimes extra protection. Avoid cash, and never pay the full amount far in advance. If a supplier asks for full payment upfront with no contract, treat that as a warning sign. For smaller suppliers, such as a local florist or cake maker, they may accept payment on delivery, but still confirm this in advance.

Keep a folder, digital or paper, with every receipt, invoice and contract. Note the payment dates on your calendar so you do not miss a balance. If you are using a wedding planner, they may handle payments for you, but always check the terms yourself. If anything feels unclear, ask the supplier to explain before you commit.
