Short answer
Start planning 12 to 18 months before your wedding if you can. That gives you time to book venues and suppliers, sort the legal steps, and spread the cost. If you have less time, a smaller wedding is still very doable.
A year to eighteen months is a comfortable window for most weddings. It lets you visit several venues without pressure, book the suppliers you want, and give notice without stress. Popular venues and photographers often book up a year ahead, especially for summer Saturdays. Starting early also means you can save gradually rather than paying everything at once.
If you have less time, do not panic. A six month timeline works if you are flexible on dates and venues. Consider a weekday or a Sunday, or a less traditional venue. You can also keep the guest list smaller, which makes everything simpler and cheaper. The legal notice periods are fixed, so work backwards from your date: at least 28 days in England, Wales and Northern Ireland, and 29 days in Scotland. Registrars often advise giving notice much earlier, so check with your local register office.
Whatever your timeline, the order stays the same: budget, guest list, date, venue, legal notice, then suppliers and details. If you are short on time, skip the extras and focus on the ceremony, food and your guests.
