How to tell if he's proposing soon?

Answered by the UK Wedding Websites editorial team · Updated 2026-10-12 · For brides

Short answer

Look for changed behaviour, not just clues. He may ask about your ring size, check your diary for a special date, or suddenly arrange a weekend away. He might also seem nervous or secretive about plans.

People rarely hide a proposal perfectly. Watch for practical signs: he asks what kind of jewellery you like, or casually mentions a friend's ring. He may check your work rota or family plans for a specific weekend, or book a trip that feels more romantic than usual. He might start talking about the future more concretely, like where you would live or what you would name children. He could also become oddly secretive with his phone, or disappear for short chats with your parents or close friends. Nervousness is a big clue. If he is usually calm but now fidgets, forgets small things, or asks you to dress up with no clear reason, something is happening. But do not read too much into every detail. Some people plan proposals months ahead, and others decide on the day. If you want to know, you can simply ask whether he sees marriage in your future. That is fair and open. If you find the ring or the plan, do not spoil it. Let him have his moment, and enjoy the surprise of the actual question.
