How long is too long without proposing?

Answered by the UK Wedding Websites editorial team · Updated 2026-10-12

Short answer

There is no fixed time limit, but if you have been together for several years, live together, and have talked about marriage, a long delay without a proposal can feel hurtful. The real issue is silence, not time.

Every couple moves at their own pace, so there is no magic number of months or years. What matters is that you are both on the same page. If you have been together for two years and one of you is ready, the other should say so honestly. If you have been together for five years and have never discussed marriage, that is a red flag.

The kindest approach is to talk about your timeline early and often. You do not need to spoil a surprise, but you can agree on a rough window, such as "within the next year" or "after we buy a house". This gives both of you security without turning the proposal into a countdown.

If you feel the wait is too long, say so directly. Use "I" statements, like "I feel anxious when we do not talk about our future". Avoid ultimatums, but be clear that you need a real answer. If your partner keeps avoiding the conversation, that is information too. A proposal should come from genuine desire, not pressure, but you are allowed to ask for clarity.
