How do you tell if someone has viewed your Google Drive?

Answered by the UK Wedding Websites editorial team · Updated 2026-10-12 · For guests

Short answer

You cannot tell who has viewed a Google Drive file. Google does not provide a view counter for shared files, so there is no way to see who opened your folder.

It is natural to wonder whether your guests have seen the photos or the live stream link you have shared. Unfortunately, Google Drive does not offer a feature that records when someone opens a file. You will not receive a notification, a list of names or a count of views.

This is a common concern for couples who upload their wedding album to a shared folder. You can check that sharing settings are correct by opening the file, clicking Share and looking at the people with access. This only shows who can open it, not who has actually looked.

If you want to know if guests have engaged with your content, try a different approach:

  • Use a wedding website with RSVP and a guest dashboard to track who has visited.
  • Ask guests to confirm receipt with a simple reply or a message in your group chat.
  • Host a live stream on a platform that shows viewer numbers if you want that data.

For legal or religious detail that is not covered here, the rules can change. Check GOV.UK, the register office or your place of worship.
