How to not look awkward in group pictures?

Answered by the UK Wedding Websites editorial team · Updated 2026-10-12 · For guests

Short answer

Relax your shoulders, take a deep breath, and think of something funny just before the shot. Place your hands naturally, and turn your body slightly to the side.

Awkwardness usually comes from tension, so start by shaking out your arms and rolling your shoulders. Take a slow breath and let it out just before the camera clicks. Instead of staring stiffly, think of a private joke or a happy memory. That gives your eyes a natural sparkle. Turn your body at a slight angle rather than facing the camera straight on. This makes your posture look more relaxed and flattering. Let your hands rest naturally, for example one on your hip or lightly in a pocket. If you are standing next to someone, lean slightly towards them rather than away. Keep your chin up and slightly forward, which avoids a double chin. Do not hold your smile for too long; wait until the photographer counts down, then smile genuinely. If you feel nervous, look at the photographer's forehead instead of the lens. After the shot, keep your pose for a second in case they take another. Remember that everyone else feels the same, so a small laugh together often makes the best photo of all.
