How do you write a short and sweet thank you note?

Answered by the UK Wedding Websites editorial team · Updated 2026-10-12 · For brides

Short answer

Write three sentences: thank them for the specific gift or help, mention how you used or enjoyed it, and say you look forward to seeing them soon. Sign off warmly.

A short and sweet thank you note has three parts. First, thank the person for something specific, like the gift they gave or the help they offered. Second, say how you have used it or what it meant to you, such as, "We have already put the vase on the mantelpiece" or "Your speech made us laugh and cry." Third, end with a warm closing, like "We hope to see you soon" or "With love from us both."

Keep the whole note to around three or four sentences. Write it by hand on a simple card, and send it within a few weeks of the wedding. You do not need to mention money or the cost of a gift. Just focus on the thought behind it. If you are writing many notes, keep a list of what each person gave or did, so you can personalise each one. A short note that feels genuine is better than a long one that sounds copied.
