How long does a nikkah last?

Answered by the UK Wedding Websites editorial team · Updated 2026-10-12 · For guests

Short answer

A nikkah usually takes between 15 and 45 minutes. The exact length depends on the ceremony, the readings chosen and how many people speak. Some families include extra traditions before or after the marriage vows.

The nikkah is the Islamic marriage contract and it is often the spiritual heart of a Muslim wedding. In the UK it is usually led by an imam or another authorised person who explains the purpose of the marriage and asks both partners to accept the terms.

Most of the time the ceremony is quiet and focused. It includes the khutbah, which is a short sermon about marriage, the mahr, which is the gift from the groom to the bride, and the public declaration of consent. Two adult Muslim witnesses must be present and they sign the marriage document.

If you want the marriage to be legally recognised in England and Wales, remember that a religious ceremony on its own is only legal if it takes place in a building registered for marriages with an authorised person present. Many couples arrange a short civil ceremony at the register office or an approved venue to make sure everything is legal. Rules can vary, so check GOV.UK, your local register office or your place of worship.

Some families add cultural customs such as the signing of a separate contract, a feast or a small gathering. These do not change the length of the nikkah itself. Plan your day so there is room for both the ceremony and any celebrations that follow.
