Who do I need to inform if I get married?

Answered by the UK Wedding Websites editorial team · Updated 2026-10-12

Short answer

You must tell your local register office by giving notice of marriage in person, at least 28 full days before the ceremony. You also need two witnesses at the ceremony and may need to inform your place of worship if you are having a religious service.

The first step is to give notice of marriage at your local register office. Both partners must attend in person, usually where each of you has lived for at least the last seven days. This notice is valid for 12 months, so the wedding must take place within that period. You will also need two witnesses who are aged 16 or over and are able to sign the marriage document on the day. If you are having a religious ceremony in a registered building, you may need to speak to the minister or priest about banns or a licence. You do not have to tell your employer, bank or family unless you choose to, though your marriage certificate is the usual proof if you need to update your name on official documents.
