Do you need a ceremony to get married in the UK?

Answered by the UK Wedding Websites editorial team · Updated 2026-10-12 · For parents

Short answer

Yes, you need a legal ceremony in the UK. It can be a civil ceremony at a register office or approved venue, or a religious ceremony in a registered building. You cannot just sign paperwork without a ceremony.

In the UK, marriage requires a formal ceremony conducted by an authorised person. In England and Wales, this can be a civil ceremony at a register office or approved venue, or a religious ceremony in a building registered for marriages. Church of England and Church in Wales weddings usually require banns or a licence. In Scotland, you can marry almost anywhere agreed with the registrar or celebrant, indoors or outdoors. In Northern Ireland, you give notice to the registrar and have a ceremony in a registered venue.

The ceremony must include the legal declarations and vows, and you need two witnesses to sign the marriage schedule or document. Since 2021, marriages in England and Wales are recorded on a schedule signed on the day, not in a register book. Civil ceremonies cannot include religious content like hymns or prayers, but you can have poems and non-religious readings if the registrar agrees.

If you have a religious ceremony that is not legally binding on its own, such as a nikah in England and Wales, you will need a separate civil ceremony to make the marriage legal. Humanist ceremonies are legally binding in Scotland and Northern Ireland, but not in England and Wales. Always check the current rules with your venue or celebrant.
