How to get married in Croydon?

Answered by the UK Wedding Websites editorial team · Updated 2026-10-12 · For parents

Short answer

To get married in Croydon, you and your partner must each give notice of marriage in person at the Croydon Register Office, at least 28 full days before your chosen ceremony date.

You will need to book your ceremony at the Croydon Register Office or another approved venue in the borough. Both partners must attend the notice appointment with proof of identity, proof of where you have lived for the last seven days, and any relevant documents if you have been married before. Once the notices are accepted, you have 12 months to hold your ceremony. You will need two witnesses who are aged 16 or over to sign the marriage schedule on the day. The ceremony is civil and cannot include religious readings or hymns, but you can choose poems, songs or non-religious readings with the registrar's agreement. If you prefer a religious ceremony, you must use a building registered for marriages and check with the place of worship about banns or a licence.
