Can I get an UK marriage certificate if married abroad?

Answered by the UK Wedding Websites editorial team · Updated 2026-10-12

Short answer

Yes. A marriage that is legally registered in the country where you married is usually recognised in the UK, and you can use your foreign certificate as proof.

If your marriage is legal where it took place, UK authorities generally accept it. You do not need to re-marry in the UK just because you want a certificate here.

Your foreign marriage certificate is the usual proof for changing your name, updating passports, banks and employers. You may want an official translation if the document is not in English. Some organisations ask for a certified translation, so check with them first.

A few things can affect recognition:

  • the rules of the country where you married
  • whether the ceremony met local legal requirements
  • UK rules on age and consent

If you are unsure, check the GOV.UK page for that country and the local rules there. You can also ask your local register office or a solicitor for advice.

Keep your original certificate safe. If you plan to use it often, consider keeping a photocopy or a digital copy in a secure place. If you later move house or change your name, your marriage certificate is the document that proves the change.
