Short answer
A typical reception starts with drinks and canapés, then guests are called to dinner, followed by speeches, cake cutting and the first dance. The evening ends with the last dance and a final send-off.
Most UK receptions follow a familiar rhythm, though you can move things around to suit your day. Guests usually arrive for a drinks and canapés period so everyone can settle in and greet one another. Once the registrar or celebrant has signed the documents, you may invite everyone to the meal.
After the meal, speeches often happen in a set order. Parents or guardians may speak first, followed by the partners, then the best man or chief witness. Keep them short so guests can enjoy their food. The cake cutting usually comes next, often before the dancing begins.
The first dance traditionally kicks off the party, but many couples now put it earlier or skip it. Later, you might have a parent dance, then the open floor for everyone. A final send-off with sparklers, balloons or a vehicle departure gives a neat close to the night.
If you are unsure about any legal or religious timing, check with your register office or place of worship.
