Short answer
The traditional order begins with the officiant taking their place, then the groom, best man, bridesmaids, maid of honour and finally the bride. After the vows and signing, the couple leaves the ceremony first, followed by the wedding party.
In a traditional UK church or register office wedding, the order usually runs like this. The officiant enters first and waits at the front. The groom and best man enter next, often from a side door. The bridesmaids and maid of honour walk in, and the bride follows with her parent. During the service there may be readings, hymns, a sermon and the exchange of rings.
The legal part happens when you both sign the marriage schedule or document with two witnesses present. This is the part that makes the marriage official. After the signing, the officiant declares you married and you walk back down the aisle together. The wedding party leaves next, followed by the parents and then the guests.
Many couples now shorten or reorder these steps. You might have a unity ceremony, a reading from a friend, or a musical performance. The traditional order is a helpful guide, not a requirement. Check with your register office or place of worship if you are unsure about any detail.
