Who pays for the wedding if the parents are divorced or remarried?

Answered by the UK Wedding Websites editorial team · Updated 2026-10-12 · For parents

Short answer

There is no fixed rule. The couple decides, and divorced or remarried parents are not expected to pay. Any contribution is voluntary and should be agreed openly, without assumptions.

When parents are divorced or remarried, the old idea that the bride's family pays no longer applies. You and your partner are the ones who decide the budget and who contributes. Start by working out what you can afford yourselves, then think about whether you want to ask parents at all.

If parents offer to help, treat each offer separately. A parent who remarried may have new financial commitments, and a step-parent may or may not want to contribute. Never assume a step-parent will pay. Have a calm conversation with each parent or couple, and be clear about what their contribution would cover, such as the catering or the flowers.

If one side gives more than the other, that is fine. What matters is that you both feel comfortable and that no one feels pressured. You might also decide to pay for everything yourselves to keep things simple. If you do accept help, agree in advance what happens if plans change, and thank everyone warmly, whatever the amount.
