Short answer
A contract can be voided by fraud, misrepresentation, duress, illegality, mistake, or lack of capacity. If one party was pressured, misled, or unable to understand the terms, the agreement may not hold. Always get written terms and check them carefully.
A contract is only as strong as the agreement behind it. Six things can make it void or voidable. Fraud happens when one side lies to get you to sign. Misrepresentation is a false statement that changes your decision. Duress means you were threatened or pressured into agreeing. Illegality applies if the contract is for something against the law, like an unlicensed service. Mistake covers cases where both sides were wrong about a key fact. Lack of capacity means someone could not understand the contract, for example due to age or mental health.
For your wedding, these issues are rare but real. A venue might promise a specific room in writing, then swap it. A caterer might quote for one number of guests, then charge for more. If you were told something verbally that is not in the written contract, that could be misrepresentation. If a supplier insists you sign on the spot and will not let you read it, that could feel like duress.
To protect yourself, never sign under pressure. Read every clause, even the small print. Ask for anything promised in writing before you pay a deposit. If something feels wrong, step back and get advice. The law is on your side if you were genuinely misled, but you must act quickly. Check the contract for cancellation terms and what happens if either side breaks the agreement. If you are unsure about any term, ask the supplier to explain it in plain English.
