Is a deposit refundable if you change your mind?

Answered by the UK Wedding Websites editorial team · Updated 2026-10-12

Short answer

If you change your mind, a deposit is usually not refundable. Most wedding photography contracts state that deposits are non-refundable once paid, because the photographer has reserved your date.

Changing your mind is different from a genuine emergency or a breach of contract by the photographer. In most cases, if you simply decide you no longer want their services, you will lose your deposit.

That is because the photographer has likely turned down other work for your date. They may also have spent time on pre-wedding calls, planning, or travel arrangements. The deposit compensates them for that commitment.

Some photographers may offer a goodwill refund or a credit towards another date, especially if you give plenty of notice and they can rebook. It never hurts to ask, but you should not expect it.

If you are having second thoughts before paying a deposit, take time to compare packages and read reviews. Once you pay, treat it as a firm commitment. If you do need to cancel, be honest and polite, and ask if there is any flexibility. The worst they can say is no.
