Are photography deposits refundable?

Answered by the UK Wedding Websites editorial team · Updated 2026-10-12

Short answer

Photography deposits are not automatically refundable. Whether you get your money back depends entirely on the terms in your contract, so check that document first before assuming anything.

A deposit is usually taken to secure your photographer's date and time. Once they turn away other enquiries for that day, they have lost potential income, which is why most deposits are non-refundable.

Your contract should state clearly what happens to the deposit if you cancel. Some photographers refund it if they can rebook the date, others keep it as a cancellation fee, and a few offer a partial refund. There is no standard rule across the UK.

If your contract is silent on refunds, speak to your photographer directly. Most will be fair, especially if you give plenty of notice. If you booked verbally with no written terms, the law around deposits can be less clear, and you may need to negotiate.

Always read the cancellation clause before you sign. If anything feels unclear, ask the photographer to explain it in writing before you pay. A deposit is not a punishment, it is a commitment from both sides.
