Is there a color you shouldn't wear to a wedding?

Answered by the UK Wedding Websites editorial team · Updated 2026-10-12 · For guests

Short answer

Avoid wearing white or anything that could be mistaken for the couple's outfit, unless they have asked guests to do otherwise. Beyond that, you are free to choose colours you feel happy and confident in.

The one colour to avoid is white, or any shade very close to it, like ivory, cream or champagne. These are traditionally reserved for the couple, and wearing them can look like you are trying to upstage them. This is especially important if the couple has chosen a specific look for their day.

Some couples now ask guests to wear a particular colour, or to avoid a specific one, to create a certain mood in photos. If the invitation or wedding website says this, please follow it. It is a small thing that shows you respect their wishes.

Other than that, there are no hard rules. A dark suit or dress is fine for a formal evening wedding, while lighter colours suit a summer garden party. Think about the venue, the time of day and the season. If you are unsure, a mid-tone colour is usually a safe and smart choice.

If you are part of the bridal party, you may be asked to wear a set colour or style. That is different from being a guest, and the couple will tell you what to wear.
