What color is not okay to wear to a wedding?

Answered by the UK Wedding Websites editorial team · Updated 2026-10-12 · For guests

Short answer

Avoid wearing white, off-white or anything that could look like a wedding dress, and check the invitation for a dress code or theme. Some couples also ask guests not to wear black or red.

The safest rule is to never wear white, cream, ivory or champagne. These shades belong to the couple, and wearing them can look like you are trying to upstage them. If you are unsure, pick a colour that is clearly yours.

Black used to be frowned upon but is now widely accepted, especially for evening weddings. Still, a full head-to-toe black outfit can look funereal for a daytime garden party. Add a splash of colour with a scarf, shoes or jewellery.

Red can be tricky. In some families it is a bold, celebratory choice. In others it draws too much attention. If you love red, choose a deeper shade and keep the rest of your outfit understated.

If the invitation says black tie, white tie, cocktail or a specific theme, follow it. When in doubt, ask the couple or a member of the bridal party. It is always better to ask than to guess.
