Is it a rule not to wear white to a wedding?

Answered by the UK Wedding Websites editorial team · Updated 2026-10-12 · For guests

Short answer

It is not a legal rule, but it is a long-standing UK wedding custom to avoid wearing white. Guests should choose another colour so they do not upstage the couple on their day.

There is no law about what guests may wear, so you will not be turned away for choosing white. Still, the custom is strong and most couples would feel uncomfortable if a guest dressed like the bride. The aim is simply to let the couple stand out.

Think of it this way: white, cream, ivory, champagne and pale blush can all photograph as bridal. Even a white dress with a bold pattern may read as white from a distance or in photos. If you love a light shade, pick one with a clear print, a dark background or a strong colour block.

If you are unsure, ask the couple or a member of the bridal party. They will usually tell you what they would prefer. This is especially helpful if the wedding has a colour theme or a dress code.

When in doubt, choose a mid or dark tone. You will look polished, feel confident and avoid any chance of causing offence.
