Short answer
You need a coordinator if you have already planned most of the wedding and just want help on the day. You need a planner if you want help from the start, with budgets, suppliers and timelines. For small weddings, a coordinator is often enough.
A wedding planner works with you for months, sometimes a year or more. They help you choose the venue, find suppliers, manage the budget, and keep everything on track. They are useful if you have a complicated wedding, a tight deadline, or little time to research.
A wedding coordinator, sometimes called a day-of coordinator, steps in closer to the wedding. They take over the running of the day: checking suppliers arrive, keeping the schedule moving, solving problems, and making sure you and your guests are where you need to be. They do not usually help with the early planning.
For a small wedding, a coordinator is the smarter choice. You can do the planning yourself, then hand over the final week and the day itself. That gives you freedom during the planning and calm on the day.
If you are unsure, think about what you enjoy. If you love spreadsheets and phone calls, you do not need a planner. If you dread them, a planner might be worth it. If you just worry about the day running smoothly, book a coordinator.
Remember that a coordinator cannot fix legal mistakes. You still need to give notice on time and have the right documents. Check GOV.UK for the current rules in your part of the UK.
