Short answer
Plan a good wedding by focusing on what matters to you both, not on what others expect. Start with your budget, guest list and venue, then build the day around your values and the people you love.
Begin with the practical foundations. Agree a budget you are comfortable with, and write down your guest list before anything else, because that drives venue size, catering and stationery. Choose a date and a venue that fits your style, whether that is a register office, an approved venue, a religious building, or in Scotland almost any place you agree with the registrar. Give notice in plenty of time: 28 days in England, Wales and Northern Ireland, and at least 29 days in Scotland, though registrars often advise 10 to 12 weeks.
Then plan the ceremony and reception around what feels meaningful to you. Pick readings, music and vows that reflect your relationship. Remember that civil ceremonies in England and Wales cannot include religious content, but poems and songs are fine if the registrar agrees. In Scotland, humanist celebrants can conduct legal weddings, and in Northern Ireland they can too. If you want a religious ceremony, check with your place of worship about banns, licences or other requirements.
Keep the day simple and kind. Delegate tasks to trusted friends or family, build in buffer time between events, and remember that the best weddings are those where the couple is relaxed and present. You do not need every tradition, just the ones that matter to you.
