How do you make wedding place cards?

Answered by the UK Wedding Websites editorial team · Updated 2026-10-12 · For the bridal party

Short answer

You can make place cards by hand with good quality card stock, a paper trimmer and a fine pen. Fold the card in half to make a tent, or keep it flat and use a small holder.

Making your own place cards is straightforward and gives you full control over the style. Start with good quality card stock, around 250 to 300 grams per square metre, so the card stands up well. Cut the cards to about 90mm by 55mm using a paper trimmer for straight edges.

For a tent card, fold the card in half so it stands on its own. Write the guest's name on the front with a fine-tipped pen in a colour that contrasts with the card. If you prefer a flat card, cut a small slit in the top and slide in a name tag, or use a simple clip or stand.

You can also add a small detail, like a thin border or a single motif, using a stamp or a stencil. Keep the design simple so the name remains the focus. If you are making many cards, set aside enough time, because handwriting each one takes longer than you expect.
