Which name goes first on wedding invites?

Answered by the UK Wedding Websites editorial team · Updated 2026-10-12 · For brides

Short answer

There is no fixed rule. Traditionally the bride's name came first, but many couples now list names in the order they prefer, alphabetically, or simply the one that sounds better. Choose what feels right for you.

In the past, wedding invitations usually listed the bride's name first, followed by the groom's, because the bride's family often hosted. That tradition is not a legal requirement, and many modern couples ignore it completely. You can put your names in any order you like.

If you are a same-sex couple, there is no default order at all, so pick whichever feels natural. Some couples use alphabetical order to keep it neutral. Others put the person whose family is hosting first, if that matters to you. Many simply choose the order that reads best on the page.

If you are including both partners' full names, use the same format for each, for example both with first and last names, or both with middle names if you use them. If one of you is changing their name after the wedding, you can still use your current names on the invite. The important thing is that both names are clearly there, and that the wording feels like you, not like a rulebook.
