How do I put a date on an invite?

Answered by the UK Wedding Websites editorial team · Updated 2026-10-12

Short answer

Write the date in full, for example "Saturday, the fifteenth of June, two thousand and twenty-five". You can also use figures like "15 June 2025" if you prefer a simpler look.

The traditional UK style is to spell the date out in words, which looks formal and elegant. For example, "Saturday, the fifteenth of June, two thousand and twenty-five". This is common on classic invitations. If you prefer a modern or simpler style, you can write "Saturday 15 June 2025" or "15.06.2025". Whichever you choose, be consistent across all your stationery. Avoid using "06/15/2025" because that is the American format and can confuse UK guests. If your wedding is in a register office or approved venue, the date is fixed when you give notice and book the venue, so check that before printing. For a church wedding, the banns or licence will confirm the date. If you are having a religious ceremony that is not legally binding on its own, such as a nikah, you may also have a separate civil ceremony on a different date. In that case, put the date of the legal ceremony on the invitation, or clearly state which date is which. Always double-check the day of the week matches the date before you send anything out.
