How do I address an envelope for newlyweds?

Answered by the UK Wedding Websites editorial team · Updated 2026-10-12 · For guests

Short answer

After the wedding, address the envelope to the couple using their new titles and surname if they changed it, such as Mr and Mrs James Brown. If they kept separate surnames, use both names on one line or two lines.

For a newly married couple, use the outer envelope with their full names and titles. If they share a surname, write Mr and Mrs James Brown, or list both first names, Mr James Brown and Mrs Sarah Brown. If they are a same-sex couple, use the same pattern with their preferred titles.

If they kept their own surnames, write both names on one line, such as Mr James Brown and Ms Sarah Smith, or put each name on a separate line. If you are not sure whether they changed names, it is safer to use both original surnames or ask them directly.

For the inner envelope, you can write just their first names, or Mr and Mrs Brown if they share a surname. If you are sending a thank-you card or a gift, the same rules apply. Always use the names they use on their wedding stationery or social media after the wedding. If they have a joint title, like Dr and Dr, use that. If they prefer no titles, just use their full names without Mr or Mrs.
